Low profile air cleaner choices?

A good old 14" air clean with a drop base (Corvette big block) and an element just tall enough to clear the choke horn will work. This engine is equipped with the Blue Thunder manifold, which is taller than a Ford or Edelbrock manifold.

This is the B&M/Holley Hi-Tek air cleaner. Also affectionately called the dog-bone or the hammer-head.

Ducatista, know there are two different stock engine screens- the later has a solid raised center to clear the air cleaner. Ultimately, clearance will depend on what intake manifold you use, as well as whether it bothers you to lose power at higher rpms due to an air cleaner top being too close to the carb top, restricting flow. One or the cleanest setups I've seen was a custom two-piece chromed screen with EFI stacks inside a Cobra or GT-40-style box in the middle. ALL the low-profile air cleaners will measurably restrict top end power. But if you don't spend much time in the upper 1/3 of your speedometer, a dropped-base cleaner with a 1-1/2" x 14" element and a flat sheet top will probably fit.
On our Pantera with SVO raised-port aluminum heads and matching high-rise intake running a Holley 700 DP, I lowered the entire engine package by 1" and STILL cannot get even the bare carburetor under any stock engine screen.

A 1.5" drop base with a 14" K&N X-Stream top and 3" tall filter (or the whole X-Stream system) will give you an air cleaner that fits under the screen and the benefit of top flow, which is a problem with other low profile options.

My engine screen was already cracked and I did not want to mill down the new intake, so cutting the screen was not painful at all.

Mr. Finch's Spectre set-up is NOT the only Spectre solution.

Never having the option of a screen, I have no idea why one is needed.

My car has a lot of modifications from stock, all for safety and/or drivability . . .is that really wrong?
