I am replacing my OEM harmonic balancer and decided it would be a good idea to replace the crank seal with the balancer off.
The crank seal appears pressed into the block. The seal has a metal lip, but prying under it and at all angles does nothing. Suggestions? Thanks, Jeff |

If it has the lip,it is likely the original seal. My NAPA replacement did not have the lip. You are going at it the right way - it will come out if you can get under the lip and work your way around, lifting as you go. Perhaps using a Dremel with a cut-off wheel to remove a section of the lip will give you a better edge to work against? Larry UPDATE: Just read your post to the POCA forum. since you have the lip peeled up, how about a pair of vice-grips on the lip, and try to pull it out (leverage) like a claw hammer pulling out a nail? Baby tugs, working your way around the outer edge? |

The new seal is installed. I used a little bit of the red RTV on the metal sleeve to make it more fun removing for the next owner (son).
Installing the new seal was also a PITA. I found an old thread where George suggested using a piece of PCV pipe. 50 cents at Home Depot and a small block of wood and it worked great. Is there any need for additional sealant on the crank end or keyway ? Thanks, Jeff |
