I just had 2564's engine rebuilt and the engine guy installed a MSD # 8580 distributor which needed to be removed because it was too tall to fit under the engine screen and also hit the firewall. I see that alot of people use the MSD #8577 with the 6-AL box but I am wondering if this will fit under the stock 72 Pre-L engine screen? I really dont want to but this one and to find out it doesn't fit thanks ed kpsc@verizon.net

Hey kpsc, you can get the MSD cap and rotor for the chevy, this setup removes the cap spacer the MSD has on the Ford setups, and its way smaller. Just remove the stock cap and rotor, install the new one they use turn type fastners, rewire and its done. I needed to do this on my old Ranchero with the 351 for air cleaner clearance. I think when I did it the cost was under $50.

Jeff are you saying that I can keep the billet MSD distributor and just change the cap? Are u sure the ford distributor will work with a chevy cap and rotor? I thought the gears inside or something else was different between ford and chevy. ed

I did it, I seem to remember you have to drill out the fastners for the original cap, but the chevy cap and rotor fit right on it. Just give MSD a call they can give you the correct part numbers for this swap, the guy at the parts store I was dealing with turned me on to this mod saying alot of Mustang guys did it. I still have the original cap in the garage. I sold so much 351 stuff before we got 1717, and now I wish I still had it all. Here is the number and address of the place that turned me on to the smaller cap.
