I am interested in replacing my current air cleaner with a more free flowing style. I have seen an air cleaner (see attachment) and really like the style. It’s not a brand name so I am little leery of throwing my hard earned $ at a piece of trash. Anyone have any experience with these air cleaners?

I use this same air filter assembly on my FFR Cobra and it works great. For a smaller sized filter (roughly 8x11), it seems to flow a lot of air. The Cobra is running a 427W with a 850 Mighty Demon carb and has no problems breathing (Supporting 585 hp which is more than my Pantera puts out).

I purchased this air cleaner and it arrived today. The quality/craftsmanship looks reasonable. Did a quick install and took my car on a test drive. The acceleration seems a little crisper but I noticed a significant improvement in roll-on acceleration between 40 and 70 mph. Overall the air cleaner seems like a decent value. I had been told that if I replaced my “dog bone” style air cleaner with a more free flowing style I would gain approx. 20hp. From the performance change noted this was probably a true statement.

This has long been voiced, but some years back the Houston owners did some dyno testing.

This is what Gray Gregory posted to the POCA forum -

Your memory is correct about the dyno day here in Houston. We dyno'd my
car (470 FWHP 377 stroker) with and without a standard dog bone air
cleaner (with a single filter element in each side) and the difference
was exactly 1hp.

It’s hard to argue with a dyno. Maybe I just need to drive the thing more often so I can remember what it felt like the last time.

I just put my car together see 6656 and I hve a old style 10 inch chrome top air cleaner, I looked at the dog bone and liked it but I went with something I had. How much and where did you get the one you are using now and do you want to sell the dog bone?

I found the pictured (check my first entry) air cleaner at my local auto parts store and they wanted around $200.00 for it. They are available from Summit also but you have to really look for it. The one I bought was on ebay for about $150 all inclusive. It was the same as the one I’d seen in the parts store.

I’d seen the round filter top K&N’s and really like them. The round K&N wouldn’t fit my car unless I cut the deck lid and that’s not going to happen. I was a little concerned about the oval filter top because there was no listed brand. It turns out that the oval filter looks to be of good quality and fits nicely without mods. The oval is a little taller (5.8”) but a few inches narrower so my view out the back window is actually a little better.

I’m not ready to let the dog bone go yet but I’ll keep you in mind. They are available from Jegs. Check their latest holiday catalog, pg. 195 lower left. Theirs is called the “powercharger air cleaner” by Holley. It looks to be the same as the dog bone I have. I’m sure it’s online too. Good luck.

6656 is beautiful. Congrats on the paint, it came out very nice. I’ll bet the button in your ash tray empties the bottle in the back, very tricky.
