What to do when the left door on both my DeTomasos open too much after years of use? It's so much now that the doors occasionally touch the front fender when fully open, so the paint is being damaged.

Is there a repair kit? Or can I cut the limiter and weld it shorter? Or?

Just want to state that I believe I also have this same problem as I have noticed chiping on the edge of my door on my passenger side.

There was an article in the POCA Newsletter about this. Can't remember which issue.

Chipping will happen when the hinge pins wear, or the door-check strap is broken or worn. If you lift up a little on the open door and it moves AT ALL, the hinge pins or hinge bodies are worn. New pins can be made, the aluminum hinges can be rewelded and machined, a replacement door-check strap made, or possibly NOS or good-used hinge assemblies are available from the vendors. Diagnose the trouble and call around.

I had this issue with my drivers door and the leading edge of the door was damaged by striking the inner door well.

The issue is generally not worn pins; rather, it is caused by a worn stop bushing in the hinge assembly. I had Kirk Evans rebuild mine.

If you need a quick and (very) dirty solution to doors opening too much, here it is:
On my Longchamp both doors open too much. I thought, how about welding a small drop where the striker meets the other part? And when I looked closely I could see it had been done before(!) So I just added a little extra welding, and it works perfectly. Crude but effective...

Here's a fuzzy picture, showing the shiny weld on the striker behind the double layer thing...

Now, make sure you don't weld on too much, frankly my right door now opens 2" less than I'd prefer. I can't pick up really fat women anymore... Big Grin
