I think the export is more of a market factor; thanks to US policymakers the US$ is in the doghouse compared to other currencies, hence cars here are attractive to out of country buyers.

I was talking to a Canadian friend and he said the past year has shown the largest number of cars in general going across the border into Canada. The CAD$ is now basically 1:1 for the US$ and a US$50K car is CAD$50K, whereas only 3-4 years ago it would have been ~CAD$70K.

When I lived in Australia the oposite was true and the US$ was strong, so strong in fact that US muscle cars were being re-exported back to the US!
