Air Conditioning problems

when I bought my 72 Pantera the air didn't work, I got tired of being hot so I gave it a shot of freon, and a couple of days later I blew an air cond hose! I hear of so many cars with problems with their air. Is this a never ending battle?? My car is 100o/o stone stock, can I make the system work with the stock ac compressor. How about some advice, and comments. Don
