Hello, well I have been thinking the same when first saw this part, and maby I am wrong ,but I think it's helps opening the lid the first inch, so you'll be able to reach the lid edge with fingers, after you have pulled the handle inside the car.A small Spring is connected between the little elbow and the locking unit.
