Will, If the car is in the States, when you send the title documents to the US Customs Office at the border crossing you intend to use, they should do a full check to make sure it's clear to export. I think that includes liens as well as any theft reports. When you register the car in Canada the MTO will look for the export stamp on the title as proof that all is OK.
