Magic smoke came out of dimmer - Can I just replace with a 5 ohm resistor?

I never really adjust this, I have it set to kind of barely on. I tried a 10 watt 5 ohm resistor and it set the brightness how I like it. Any problem with just replacing the dimmer with that?
Here's the magic smoke escaping. Strange that it bench tested OK, 3 -38 ohms or so.
