Something else that you might consider (after the coolant is drained) is to weld pipe fittings onto both of the coolant tubes and install a drain valve or pipe plug. Cutting a pipe coupling in half will give you two weld fittings and will reduce the distance that it sticks out from the coolant tube. Do this on the forward most tube (the one that bends up toward the radiator), as there is more working room in that area. This won't help you now, but it will in the future.
