The entire point of these things is to provide what is likely a temporary patch inexpensively.

In this day of being able to make anything on a three way mill I've never seen even an attempt at making anything substantial from something like a piece of aluminum plate.

Maybe a 3d printer could do a better job?
I have no idea what the original ones were like as far as quality is concerned, but I bought a Radio blanking plate, from where I cannot remember, it did cost me £18! It was of such poor quality, I had much sympathy for the trash bin it immediately went in. I pushed in an old none working radio, which looked far better.
