For most casual discussions, owners just drop everything but the last four numbers, as I refer to my car as 2511.

often, when you are asked by a fellow owner “what’s the VIN of your car”, the answer being sought is just the last four numbers. We can get away with this in Pantera land because of the low production and the short time of production.

IMHO, the term “serial number” is applicable to auto stereos, home electronics, etc. but not vehicles.
