For a stronger joint, carefully trim the edges of the gasket break so they are perfectly vertical, then use Superglue. This is what NASA uses to make 15 ft OD O-rings for joining booster rocket segments. Even Viton flurocarbon rubber will slightly oxidize in open air, which makes for a weaker glue bond; thats why you need to trim to expose fresh rubber. McMaster-Carr in Los Angeles sells kits to make your own o-rings with this technique. Use just plain Superglue, no extra stuff needed.
