The Southern AZ Panteras, along with AZ POCA (in Phoenix) and our local sister club, the Fun Italian Automobiles of Tucson (FIAT) club have prepared our 2017 event listing for our members and friends.

2016 was a lot of fun, and our group(s) held events monthly. We are a bunch of people who just love to drive our cars around, no dues (except for POCA), no drama (except the thrills and crushing disappointments that come with owning classic automobiles!). We had a safe 2016 no accidents - a few exploded motors - but that's a part of the fun!

We look forward to more excitement this year. Here is a link to last year's excitement and events...

Southern AZ Panteras 2016 "Year in Review"

Here is our list of events for 2017. We will be updating this thread with detail planning as we progress through the year, this year's list has a few holes, but we are certain to all a lot of cool, and fun events. Tubac Show in 2 days.....

Hope we see you there, with or without your cars!

Rocky

PS> There is a new event listed for 25 Feb:

Pantera trip to Prescott

Sat February 25: 9:00 am-- meet at Portillo's Restaurant, at 10574 N 90 St. Scottsdale. (SW corner at Shea Blvd and 90 St.).

Directions: 101 N, Shea Blvd E, 90 St. S., right side. We will then drive to Prescott via Wickenburg, then routes 97 and 96, past Bagdad. Lunch in Prescott, at Augie's, which is located in the Frontier Village Center, 1721 AZ 69, phone 928-777-0330.

After getting into Prescott, right onto Rt. 69 at the McDonald's, then immediately see Augie's on the right side.

After lunch, we would have the option of returning to Phoenix quicker via I-17, or taking the twisties back thru Rt. 89. Total mileage would be 200 miles to Prescott, then 100 miles back via I-17.

I have driven this route personally, and believe it is the most interesting road in the state.

Augie's has agreed to set aside parking spaces for our cars.

Another a new event listed for 1 April:

AZ Cougar Car Club Car Show

The Arizona Cougar Car Club has invited the Panteras to come back and be a part of their annual car show.

For years AZ POCA used to go to this car show held at Sanderson Lincoln on Bell road.

They have said they will include a Pantera class if we will come back and be a part of the show again!

The show should be April 1, 2017. Additional details, and the flyer will be posted once it is available.
First big event - the Tubac Show. We had a good turnout of club members, but unfortunately, only a single P-car. It was nice to see everyone:

  • Steve
  • Richard and Gina
  • Bill and Joan
  • Chuck

Lots of really cool cars. The Prosche's were out en mass, with over 35 cars. The British contingent had at least as many, with Jaguars, Austin Healeys (3000, and 100s), and a smattering of others (MGs and Triumphs).

It was a great day, at a great venue.

There are a couple of changes to the AZ Panteras / F.I.A.T. Calendar of Events...

First - The Bisbee Day Trip has been changed from 04 February to 22 April. This will result in a back-to-back set of events in April. The Photo Shoot at Pima Air & Space Museum on Saturday 15 April and the Bisbee Day Trip the following Saturday 22 April.

Second - The Cruise to Kartchner Caverns has been moved from 06 May to 20 May to allow for some breathing room between events resulting from the back-to-back events in April.
Here is the report from the trip held on Sat., February 25:

    PHX -> Prescott Pantera Prowl

Here was the plans and route:

    9:00 am -- meet at Portillo's Restaurant, at 10574 N 90 St. Scottsdale.

We will then drive to Prescott via Wickenburg, then routes 97 and 96, past Bagdad.

Lunch in Prescott, at Augie's, which is located in the Frontier Village Center.

After lunch, we would have the option of returning to Phoenix quicker via I-17, or taking the twisties back thru rt 89.

Total mileage is 200 miles to Prescott, then 100 miles back via I-17.

Augie's set aside parking spaces for our cars.

Our March event (in conjunction with the Fun Italian Automobiles of Tucson) is scheduled for Saturday, 18 March 2017. We will take a casual and easy run up to Madera Canyon located east of Green Valley.

We will have a picnic lunch at one of the tables at the Mt. Wrightson picnic area - bring your own lunch and beverages. After lunch we will head to San Xavier Mission going "the back way" among the man-made mesas west of Green Valley.

    Here's the plan:

  • 10:00 AM - Meet-up at Posada Java

  • 10:30 AM - Head up to Madera Canyon.
    Link to Madera Canyon Info

  • 11:15 AM - Lunch! Bring your own picnic lunch and beverages.

  • 12:30 PM - Head to San Xavier Mission. We will take the back way by going into Green Valley via Continental to Mission Road.

Link to San Xavier del Bac - The White Dove of the Desert!

  • 01:15 PM - Regroup at San Xavier Mission.

  • 02:00 PM - Head for home.

To RSVP or if you have any questions about this event, contact me via PM.

    Rocky, Southern Arizona Pantera Club

    Some Notes:

At San Xavier del Bac you can get blessed by wiggling the head of the life-sized saint laying in his coffin (true).

    quote:
"This tradition goes back to Father Ignacio Joseph Ramirez y Arellano who is believed to have had a miraculous state in death that was witnessed by people from all over the Tucson area."

The mission also has a chapel that is so hot because of all the votive candles, you can get heat prostration in it!

It's really cool... (I mean HAWT!)

Look who is coming on the Madera Canyon Run -

    The #5 Cunningham continuation car!

Come on out and see it's Chrysler-powered, Weber-inducted, oil-cooled self!

    The Ultimate American Sportscar

In 1952, the Cunningham C-4R was released in both coupe and roadster configurations. Powered by the original Chrysler 331 Hemi V-8, the 400 horsepower car weighed 2400 pounds. It would be ten years before another American sports car could challenge the C-4R for performance. That car, the Shelby Cobra, now an American performance icon, was directly inspired by the Cunningham C-4R.

Carroll Shelby knew about Cunningham when he introduced the Cobra. In 1952, Shelby was driving for Aston Martin at Le Mans against the C-4R and lost to them. Shelby even copied Cunningham's paint scheme, which was white cars with two blue racing stripes, which Shelby reversed.

From your AZ POCA Prez Kevin:

Please do not forget our Poker Run / Progressive dinner. AZ POCA is hosting this on Saturday afternoon March 25th.

We will be giving out cards at each stop and also have a few other opportunities to get extra cards. The one with the best poker hand will win a $200 gift card to spend on their Pantera!

Poker Run Saturday March 25th. We are meeting at Gila River Casino Saturday at 12:45 in the afternoon. President will give out the first playing card while we are waiting.

We will leave at 1:00pm to Head to Richard & Gina's home in Scottsdale, which is southwest of Cactus/ Hayden. There we will have some snacks and receive our second card.

Then we will head to the Penske Auto Racing Museum located at 7125 E. Chauncey Ln in Scottsdale, located West of Scottsdale Rd and between Princess and Mayo Blvd. We will check out the cars and receive our third card.

Then we will head south to Jerry M's home to see his collection of cars. We will refresh our selves with some drinks and receive the fourth card.

At this point is where we are supposed to go to Basko automotive to watch my motor for the race car be run on the dyno. How ever unless a small miracle takes place it is probably going to be postponed due to some problems with the dry sump system. We have ordered the parts and even offered to over night them in order to get them here fast, but there does not seem to be a way to have that happen. We will know for sure tomorrow.

So if we cannot do that, we will head on to my home at 941 N. Ellsworth rd. in Mesa. That is in between Brown and University on the East side of the rode. The North East corner of Evergreen and Ellsworth. We can have some go-cart races and we will eat dinner there. You do not need to bring anything it will be provided. I smoked a Large turkey breast and 3 Beef Briskets (If you liked my steaks you will like my Brisket) and all the fixin's.

We also will receive another card along with a couple of other opportunities to get cards.

Remember the winner, the one with the best hand will when a $200 visa card to buy something for their Pantera or what ever else they want to do with it.

    Kevin Hubby
    AZ POCA President

PS. The first registered member of AZ POCA who comments on this "PS." by posting up here will also win the beer of their choice when we next get together. Expires 3/31/2017 at midnight.

Mark your calendars and reserve the early morning of Saturday 15 April 2017 for a rare and unique opportunity to photograph your Italian car up close and personal with historic and rare aircraft at the Pima Air & Space Museum!

We will get access to the field from 7-9 AM before the museum opens for regular business.

There is a $20 non-negotiable non-refundable fee for each car going into the outdoor display area and the fee covers only this particular event. All fees collected go to the museum's general fund.

Participants will also be required to sign a "Hold Harmless" release form.

While this event is intended for Italian cars, you are welcome to bring your other automotive pride & joy, too.

We are planning to go to an early lunch afterwords at Brooklyn's Burger & Brew which is convenient to I-10. This is a pay-as-you-go event.

If you have any questions about this event or want to participate in this event, contact me via PM for details.

RSVP is mandatory for this event. Send your RSVP by the deadline of 5:00PM Pacific Time 12 April 2017.

I currently have 6 car signed up for the Parade:

  • Chuck ’74 Land Cruiser
  • Chuck ’73 Pantera
  • Dave Fiat 2000 (124 Spider)
  • Wade ’37 Model A Hotrod
  • Spike ’31 Ford Vicki
  • Stephen ’06 Lotus Elise

Would love to have more join us. I can think of a big Plymouth, a 427 Cobra and a Big Flatbed truck filled with Hay (for the kids to ride in) that could join us in representing Soldier’s camp. It’s always a lot of fun.

We will be meeting at the “Le Buzz” Coffee Shop at 0900. Le Buzz is in the same shopping center as the Safeway at the Northeast Corner intersection of Catalina Highway and Tanque Verde Rd. We’ll be driving up the hill ahead for the majority of the traffic.

We line up for the parade off Ski Lift Road at 11:15 AM, and the parade starts at 1200.

Come on out an join us!

We are very sad about this, but the Burro Fire on Mount Lemmon has forced the evacuation of the entire top of the mountain, and closed the Catalina Highway.

So it looks like our parade is canceled this year.

Look forward to the same event in 2018!

Had a bit of a change of plan for July, with the heat, and the fires.

The Southern AZ Panteras are coordinating a trip to the Tucson Speedway for some racing action!

22 July is Empire Caterpiller "Ladies Night" (Ladies get in free). The plan is lots of racing, with Modifieds, ProStocks, ProTrucks, Hobby Cars and Hornets.

Our goal is to meet at 5:30 PM, and enter the facility at 6:00. This gives us time to meet the drivers, and see the cars.

Because the lot is a huge dirt parking lot, it's not required to drive your Pantera, but you are welcome to. If you do, let me know, and I will work with the venue to arrange preferred parking in the front of the lot.

Please RSVP. You will be responsible for purchase of your own tickets! I'll be responsible for rounding up some discount coupons.

    See you there!

Tucson Speedway was fun, albeit a bit wet towards the end.

We had a good turnout, with representation from the Ferrari Owner's group, the Fun Italian Automobiles of Tucson, and the Southern AZ Pantera club.

Spent a good bit of time talking with a driver / owner / mechanic running a 351C in a '71 Mustang body. Interesting discussion. His car was a little battered, but it was good to see the Blue Oval represented.

Here I am with Ms. Tucson Speedway....

Next big event for the AZ Panteras... "Run to the Pines". It's an annual tradition for the Panteras to ride up to Pinetop/Lakeside for a great, multi-day car show.

Right now, it looks like we have at least 4 cars going...

    Richard & Gina K. - White L Model
    Dave and Lori A. - Black Pre-L
    Kevin and Wendy H. - Red Pre-L
    Chuck H. - Yellow L Model

Should be a blast, it always is a great show, and nice to get out of the heat!

    Hope you can join us!
