For a few months, I have been looking for a cosmetically nice, mechanically sorted out Pantera to buy in the SoCal area; ideally in the San Diego area.

One important requirement is that it has to be quicker then the Boxster S that I used to own (therefore the Pantera must have some engine "enhancements") and it must also be priced cheaper then a nice 996 Turbo.

My goal is to purchase a Pantera in the $35K-$45K price range. A nice 996 Turbo coupe can be had in the low fiftys.

I have owned 3 Porsches and would be thrilled to own a 996 Turbo.

However, I would be more thrilled to own a Pantera.

There doesn't seem to be any fiscally irresponsible Pantera owners. No Pantera owners are saying: "must sell now", or, "I need the cash". It seems that for me to get a Pantera that I would like at my price point, I would almost need to find a desperate seller.

I am not ready to go the 996 Turbo route yet.

I want a Pantera bad enough that I may have to raise the amount of money that I am willing to spend for a nice, sorted out car.

However, you reach a point where a nice 996 Turbo in the same price range is just too attractive to pass up, especially since they are filled with nice safety features, such as numerous airbags and very robust A/C systems.

If anybody knows of a nice car, in my price range, please let me know.

I'm looking for a nice new wife, around 5'-8" blond with blue eyes and 125 lbs within a few miles of my home. I guess the women here must be all happily married. But if I can't find what I'm looking for, a nice young guy will do just as well. If you hear of any girls meeting that description let me know or else I guess I will have to go with plan B. It's legal in some states and where it's not I will be better protected in case it doesn't work out.

And what does that have to do with Porsches?

That makes a whole lot of sense. I certainly do not want to purchase an earthquake damaged Pantera.

Dang it dude. I hate to see someone so desperate for a decent ride. Tell ya what. If you can't find a good Pantera out there I will sell ya mine. Just don't go getting all desperate like. Just know in the back of your mind if you can't find a car you can always buy mine and it will help you relax and be more patient.

I know of one here locally street legal and sorted for SCCA racing, priced just under $40K if that is to your taste.

Thanks, Joules but I am not looking to do any competition driving. I am looking for essentially a stock appearing car that is a sleeper "with a little grunt".

I have done the Porsche driving experience, and once is enough for me.

I really do enjoy 911s. Have had a couple 930s, 993tt, and most recently a 996tt I had for two years. Great cars - very predictable, safe, fast as the blazes, modern and all that.

I sold it, no regrets. Still have the Pantera, no regrets.

It's a passion vs. practicality thing. The Porsche makes more "sense" if that's what you want; the Pantera appeals to my soul.

If you want a Pantera you can drive and use as readily as a Porsche, indeed then, I'd stretch the price range for a fully sorted car from a knowledgable owner who has done the smart things. This board is the place to be to figure out what YOU feel fits "smart" or not.

Feel free to PM for specific differences in the cars, or we can discuss here.
