After a formal appeal application and several letters to the Canadian Government I finally recieved my 6.1% duty back. Despite the officer in May, telling me I had to either pay the duty or ship #4072 back to New York they were wrong to charge me. Thanks to Mark Charlton and Mike Savard #6610 for letting me know and sending me the appeal application. This forum is a great source of information!

That's great news Dave. Congratulations.

BTW, now I carry a printout of the relevant regulations with my papers whenever I am importing a car (or parts) as a handy reference. The border guys get a bit surly when they see you are prepared but I prefer not to lend my money interest-free to the government.

Interestingly, they have now "clarified" the fact that they can charge duty if the car has been "modified" from original. While brakes and other safety upgrades will "not necessarily" exclude the car from duty-free status, it might. So the safest route is to ensure that car appears as original as possible when importing.

Happy new year guys!

Mark,

Can you let me know how it should work with an engine I want to bring back into the USA from Ontario? I am purchasing a new aluminum hemi engine from Ontario back into the USA. All of the parts are from the USA that is used to make this engine, the shop I'm using will use their CNC and obviously labor to put this bad boy together. This bad boy will be expensive -- how bad am I gonna be hit with this do you think? The guy that is doing the motor says I can come and get the motor and drag it across the border with no problem, but what should I really expect to happen with this deal? It will be in June or July of 2015.

Thanks,

Mark
Mark,

I wish I knew enough to be of some help here, but I'm afraid I can't be, as I lack experience with Canada into USA transactions. I believe that in addition to US Customs paperwork, that there may also be some EPA issues to contend with (see: http://www.epa.gov/oms/imports/forms-resources.htm).

My advice would be to engage a broker to arrange everything for you. They may be able to help you avoid falling into a hole that is hard to get out of later. Best of luck!

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the advise. I'm buying the motor from For Hemis Only out of Ontario. Tim does this on a regular basis, and people from the USA have picked up motors from him and dragged them across the border before. I will make sure to ask a LOT of questions before I take the drive so there aren't any entanglements......

Thank you,

Mark
