Re: OEM Shift Knob Won't Unscrew

I'm trying to get the original Late '72 knob off my car and not having any luck. I did get it to turn but it felt like the plastic outer shell turned with respect to the insert.

Has anyone had this problem and managed to get the shifter off without destroying it?

The plastic knob has a threaded metal insert pressed in (or cast in). Someone probably added Lock-tite to keep vibration from moving the knob and spoiling the logo alignment. If the knob moves, the insert is likely bonded and you've managed to rotate the vinyl-wrapped plastic on its insert. I would leave it alone or you WILL wreck it.
