I have my wiring all apart chasing different things. I came across 2 variable resistor switches that seem to be for the same thing. They look like they control the brightness of the lights in the gauges. One is in the upper corner of the gauge panel. One is on the underside of the dash to the left of the steering column. The one in the gauge panel has 2 Y/BK wires ganged together and 2 Orange wires together. The othe has 1 Y/BK and one Orange. Checking the wires they are connected to one another.

Why are there 2 of these variable switches controlling the same circuit?

In my 74 the switch by your left knee controls the brightness for the gauge lights. The other switch turns on the map lights in the underside of the dash just over the gauges and radio. If I rememebr right it also adjusts the brightness of the map light. Keep in mind that my car was rewired once by the previous owner and as a result I am not sure if it came that way new.
