If you remove the fuel tank outlet you will find it has a baffle that would restrict free flow of returned fuel. Probably not a good restriction.

I suppose you could gut the outlet and remove that issue.

I have seen a fitting added to a curved aluminum aftermarket fuel filler (often added to the early Pre-L cars) for fuel return; suppose the same could be done on the factory neck seen on the later cars.
