Hi All - I finally got the car back from the painter. As I was driving it home with the lights on I experienced a wierd random power surge issue. The ammeter would go from not charging to pegged all the way to the right. The lights would go from dim to super bright. Anyway, after doing research here, I concluded I needed a new voltage regulator. But, behold, it seems that somewhere along the line my alternator was switched to one of the later ford models with the built in regulator. The regulator has a plug with three wires and I want to verify it is actually wired correctly before I spend money on a new alternator. It is actually wired pretty simply. The three wires from the built in regulator are all shorted together and attached to what appears to be an orange wire from the wiring harness. That's it. I googled a couple of wiring diagrams and they do not show wiring up this alternator this way. In fact, one of them shows wiring one of the wires back to a lug on the alternator. Any help with this would be appreciated. Thanks.
