Wow, it's bigger than it looks in pictures.
Jon Haas mounts his here,
wondering if anyone has another idea.
If it weren't a Pantera, I'd drill 4 holes in the sheet metal cover for the gas tank...

Great! I'll make a plate to bolt it to and put it there. Thanks John.
Well I spent about 6 hours making really nice mounting plate and am very happy with it. Then I noticed in the instructions that this is only to be used with 6 Series ignition systems which I don't have.
And I can't return it because I opened the bag of parts.
Anyone need a nice aluminum mounting plate?
AND I bumped the A/C hose and made Freon leak out.
Really hasn't been a good week for me.
John,
The 8253 is the coil that Jon Haas recommends in the instruction manual for his EIS. I've been using the 8253 with Jon's EIS for ~20k miles. It sounds like you are reading the MSD instructions...they just want you to use all of their products.
John
Agreed, and Jon Haas' EIS is on my wish list, but I don't know when I'll get to it.
I'm wondering if I can run it like a plain old (super expensive) coil.
Sure, give it a try, especially if you can’t return it.
You may find that if you are running a ballast resistor, the coil doesn’t fully charge at high RPM. This can result in a high RPM misfire.
This happened to me with a Ford TFI (solid body) coil.
Check the instructions. If it shows no ballast resistor in the circuit, you can probably keep yours in, until you know you have a problem…. That’s the safe way to do it.
Rocky
Thanks Rocky,
No sign of a ballast resistor and the car has an MSD 8350 distributor.
John
I like the way you have laid out the EIS because it would be easy access to the dip switches when you slide the cover down. It looks very neat.
FWIW, if you're running the Pantera Electronics EIS, you don't need a ballast resistor with this coil.

Post a pic of the mounting plate you made. We'd love to see it!
As others have already pointed out, for 6-series ignition, that's an MSD "instruction" to get you to buy more of their products. This is the recommended 'best' coil for use with the Pantera Electronics EIS.
I repurposed it for the Moroso 85474 air/oil separator I'm going to run.
I have never heard of an air/oil separator for the PCV system.
The Cleveland had one valve cover venting into the air cleaner and the other valve cover venting through the PCV valve into the carburetor.
is the plan to run both valve cover vents through the oil separator, or…..?
Larry
I would avoid this coil anyways. It cost us a race win once.
Hi Larry, using the stock design, one valve cover with a PCV, the other with an inlet filter.
I'm going to use the Wagner Dual flow PCV Valve in the valve cover, to the separator, to the intake under the carb.
