Hi everyone,

I am starting to gather parts for a new engine and because the prizes for original heads and the work and parts that have to be added are completely insane (at least here in Germany), I am looking for aftermarket heads.

I would like to reuse my Blue Thunder 4V intake and thus looking for a 4V head. The only ones seem to be the CHI 4V heads and the ProMaxx.

You can find a lot about CHI but almost nothing on the ProMaxx Heads for the Cleveland.

Has anybody here used these heads or can tell something about them? Are they true 4V heads?

Thanks a lot and as always: sorry for my bad english

From their website: We are a family owned business that began in 2012 by purchasing the remnants of Patriot Performance and Alabama Cylinder Head Exchange. We specialize in all types of cylinder heads, from diesel to performance. Our performance line has become a passion. Our mission is to provide the best performing cylinder heads on the market, at a price that cannot be beat. With over 30 years of racing experience, at nearly every level bracket; pro Mod and Prostock. We have learned what works and what does not on the street and the strip. We have designed a complete new line of performance heads that meet or exceed the big names in the industry. We also have customer service that is second to none, giving attention to each customer’s questions and concerns. We are a relatively small company that realizes that each customer is important.

I'm not saying they aren't made in China, but they are not the likes of your ProComp or Speedmaster. I would hazard a guess their Cleveland heads are a relatively new product line as there are no reviews to be found and the likes of Summit Racing etc. don't carry them yet. The reviews on their other heads are pretty positive. Somebody has to be first to try them and report back!

did rebuild an Cleveland from stock to "modern" update under German cost aspects ..and followed George P`s detail description. Du to same as I read issue on German cost to manufacturer I did  go Trick flow 195 with Hydro roller and 10:5 static. Engine runs Impressively. strong.

1) if you need I have 2 original 4V Heads open chamber coming from a turbo jet 1976. Heads are in running condition.
2) René a fellow from France did modify stock  heads in France , he has all details on modifying the heads and make them more "aggressive" as adding lift , still hydro flat cam so my understanding. So you want to reach out to him , and there where some issues in positioning the rockers adequately. Think he had a machine shop on Elsass for a decent cost.(??)

3) I did go a different route, Trick flow heads, Hydro roller, New intake (needed modification as used the Edelbrock performer..mods on the openings per CD camera and blue print, milling the top angle of the intake to make it "flat" as OTC has an decent angle.....all this saves def 20..40 kg weight..

and engine is running very strong..too strong so to say..awesome

Regards from Stuttgart area

Matthias

There used to be a few members that used AFD aluminum 4v heads that they were pleased with as well. I think they got out of a true 4v design for a bit but then were redesigning a new 4v head.

You mentioned expense with the SCM heads but the US dollar currency exchange is typically quite favourable vs the Australian dollar.

I decided to go the direct way and asked Promaxx about the 4V heads, the intake ports, exhaust port location, Valvesizes, availability...

This is what I got as reply:

"WE DO NOT HAVE ANY 4V AT THIS TIME

WE DO HAVE SOME 2V IN STOCK

ALL OUR INFORMATION IN ON LINE

PROMAXX PERFORMATION .COM"

I found it amusing that they don't know their own products or homepage ( I didn't edit it, everything was written in caps)

So I decided to write again:

"Thank you for your answer, I couldn't find any of the infos I asked. Such as Port Size, raised exhaust ports ...

Neither on the 2Vs, too.

The "features-section" as presented for other heads are missing completely, as you can see here:

https://promaxxperformance.com...eland-sold-in-pairs/

Do you know when the 4Vs will be back in stock?

Thank you,

Georg"

The answer came immediatly:

"YES SIR

2V HAS A 200 RUNNER

4V HAS A 225 RUNNER

NOT SURE WHEN WE WILL GET THE 4V IN NO ET

WE ONLY HAVE 2 SETS OFF 2V IN STOCK

EXHAUST PORT ARE RAISED .080 ( NEAR STOCK LOCATION )"

As you probably have guesses already: English is not my first language, but I sense a bit of sarcasm here at the "YES SIR".

If you compare the info and the pictures to other brands, it seems like the heads are copies of the AFD heads.

What is your opinion?

Just my two cents here but, this doesn't sound like a good company to be doing business with. I have had several sets of CHI cylinder heads and never had a problem with getting performance data about them. CHI also makes a 4V cylinder head for the Cleveland engine, which is expensive, but you sometimes get what you pay for.

You could contact Wilson Manifolds and see what they would charge to CNC-port a pair of anyone's 2V heads to a 4V size. They do this every day. Note that unless you are running a big-inch stroker Cleveland, 4V ports are usually considered too big for proper air velocity, or unless you regularly rev above 7000. Which is  often disaster for a stock lower end.

All Ford/SVO Pro-racing NASCAR heads after the initial 1980 A-3s used smaller intake ports (SVO 302-b & others), and the Aussies actually cast up factory iron 2V closed chamber heads for their pro racing, which should tell us something.... 2V heads run 2.08" dia intake valves which are much larger than the biggest a 350 Chevy (with comparable power) can use.

I have run 2V intakes on 4V heads, and up to about 5000 rpms (near redline for a stock lower end) this works OK. At 5000-5200, power will nose-dive. If you don't plan to be up there in revs very often, a "mismatched" intake will do just fine. The big gains in aftermarket heads for non-pro-racers are the closed combustion chamber, the mechanical valve actuation system and the 32-lb weight savings each, not bigger valves and ports.

All in all, it sounds like your most economical approach may be to buy known 2V heads and a good matching intake, and sell your present intake on E-Bay rather than trying to reuse it. Good luck either way.
