This is an odd one for me. I'm used to finding the battery dead when the electrics don't work, but the battery is fully charged. I drove the car to a Pantera meeting Thursday night and it ran fine. Today (Saturday) it's dead.

Symptoms:
1) Open the door, dome light doesn't come on. Nothing works.
2) Hook up the charger. Battery registers about 50%. Open door and dome light comes on. Try starting and starter clicks rapidly, but doesn't turn the engine over. After charging for an hour, battery still registers 50%.
3) Disconnect battery and reconnect charger, which now registers a full charge. Test battery on another car, starts right up.
4) Disconnect charger and reconnect the battery. When the positve cable touches the terminal, I hear an audible click from the engine bay, in the starter/voltage regultor area.

If the problem were a short, I'd expect the battery to be dead. It wasn't. But nothing electrical in the car works. Except when I attach the charger, so apparently 12 volts does nothing, but 14 does, although not enough to start the car.

And what's that darn click?

A dirty mind and an Italian wiring sysem are a joy forever! You seem to have found a new twist. Congradulations.

If you recently did any work involving the alternator? Make sure that the terminal screws that extend out of the back of the thing are not grounding to the cylinder head.

You have to feel in there. There is no perspective on the car in which you can see it.

My car, Sophia Smiler, although stacked and hot as hell is always playing these little tricks on me.
Thanks, guys. I did replace the alternator earlier this year. I was careful with the wiring and it worked fine all summer, but I know things do happen.

I would suspect a short, except that should've drained the battery. An open circuit (e.g. bad ground) seems more likely, but it bugs me that stuff works at 14V (with the charger connected) but is dead flat on just the battery. I'll poke around with the multimeter to see if I can find any voltage at all at the starter lead.
...When you replaced the alternator, did you keep the original EXTERNAL Voltage Regulator? I suspect THAT is the 'Click' you hear when you hook up the Battery. It is providing voltage to the alternator field because the battery is 'Low' enough to turn it on. BUT, this should not happen until the Ignition Key is, itself, turned On. I think 1. You have a faulty Voltage Regulator. 2. a faulty Alternator. (just because it's New Does Not mean it's in working condition) 3. Faulty Ignition switch, shorted inside so as NOT to turn off the voltage to the regulator, when the Key is off. 4. Faulty Grounding Strap at Battery or Transaxle. 5. Have you tried Disconnecting the Battery as it sits overnight; After fully charging it? That 'Click' means something is always ON and is draining the Battery, even though the 'KEY' is Off...
I replaced the battery, alternator, and voltage regulator last January when the charging system stopped working. I'd love to think the voltage regulator is broken already, since it's cheap and easy to fix. I've never replaced an ignition switch before, so maybe the voltage regulator is a good place to start.

I really appreciate all the help and ideas here. I normally like to figure things out and fix them myself, but electrical systems scare me and I hate not being able to hop in the car and go for a drive whenever I want.
