Does anyone have a CHI 3V single plane they'd lend out for a couple of weeks?
We shouldn't need it very long as the engine is ready for the dyno and the
CHI heads are the first we are planning to test. The intake we were going to
use got installed on a customer's engine and is no longer available. Also,
John at CHI is not interested in providing one. We do have Scott Cook's dual
plane to test on the CHI heads but we'd also like to test the single plane.

Hey why don't you guys try a weiand manifold http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=WND%2D7516&autoview=sku This manifold makes power from 1500 to 7000 rpm right out of the box and it's cheap. It fits the CHI-3V heads with the CHI spacers that they make and 15 min of port matching perfectly. I have this setup on my 398 Cid. motor. It fits under the stock screen and is also fuel injected .Let me know if you need any more info on this.

I'm not exactly sure but it won't be needed for few more weeks.
The engine is pretty much ready to go but we still have several sets of
cylinder heads to build, port and flow test before we start making pulls.
Plus, I'm scheduled for 3 weeks of flight test in Japan which will most
likely be between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That reminds me, are there
any Japanese Pantera owners near Nagoya or Gifu?

I had forgotten all about that option. We have a Weiand to test but not
the spacers. However, it's the CHI 3V intake that I'm really interested
in testing. I'm an aero engineer and I like the design of the CHI plenum.

It looks like you have a spacer under the throttle body. There
were two versions of that intake and one is taller than the other.
I ran the Weiand previously on my '74 and it just fit under the
stock screen with a Holley 735 and drop base air cleaner.

Hey, yes I do have a spacer and the reason I can have one and still clear the stock screen is because I run fuel injection and the throttle body is shorter than the carb. Also the weiand manifold 7516 fits the heads port size almost perfectly. Where as the 7517 is for the 4v heads and the ports are to big and will not match. I'll tell you I have run this manifold for years and it is great. At pocono I ran around the track in 3rd gear at 7400 rpm with no trouble. That year I was having shifting problems before I rebuilt my ZF myself and just used 1st 2nd, and 3rd . For you with a carb you should see which is better because with fuel injection the manifold is not as important. But if you intend to run on the street I'll bet the weiand would be much more of a pleasure. If you ran the 7516 and did not care about being under the stock screen then you could add any amount of spacers that you liked ,to make the plenum larger to get you carb higher up from the plenum floor for better fuel distribution and high end power. By the way CHI did the spacers for me as part of the regular price of the heads. If you need any more info let me know.

Well one reason is the height ,2nd is cost, 3dr is Driveabelity, and 4th is the power difference is not that drastic. And if you talk to the guys in australia that make the heads they will tell you the same thing as he told me when I got my CHI/3V heads that power wise there is not much difference. When a carb is used power difference will be a little wider but low end mid range out of a corner the weiand will be far better, but will still make power in the high rpm 6500 to 7500 range. With the CHI ... you can mill it down and then add a 1" wilson tapered spacer ... like im doing with my SVO intake.

Driveabilty ? Is there really a difference we would notice I guess we will see when Dan does his dyno test.

According to Chris's dyno tests ..it sure appears there is a significant difference in power.

I guess I;m just not a big fan of adapter plates.

Yes, with the CHI heads you can mill them down about an inch. They told me I could do that as well.

Cost, I would rather spend the difference on another part for the motor to keep overall cost down, You know more bang for the buck.

Driveabilty ? Dyno only tell you overall hp and torque numbers not real word Driveabilty .

Well they also never tested the weiand 7516 on his motor to know the difference.

Yes if his motor had been put together the right way and lasted more than 150 miles before every failure maybe we would see that . But i've driven that car and in real world it's not a good package. Now it would probably run much differently with fuel injection than a carb. I mean, I know my motor with a carb was not a good package. But the same motor with a Gen7-DFI injection was a whole other story. From idle to part throttle to full there was no Camparison. Dyno numbers can also be adjusted in different ways to show much different data depending how they are setup. Which has been published in many written Articules.

As far as adapter plates, the plates from CHI are matched to that manifold almost perfectly like I said before with only 10 to 15 min port gasket matching to be done. And as you know my car but never been in it, a solid roller cam cleavland ,I'll tell you with that manifold it pulls from 1500 to 7500 rpm with no trouble and drives as if it has a very mild motor which it is not.

Hey Panterasteve, the spacers make up the difference in port height. But as far as other manifolds fitting they need to be on the order of a 2V intake port size. The weiand 7516 is a 2V port size and fits with little modification. As far as other 2V port manifolds fitting they might, but I don't know for sure. As far as using your weber intake you say it's for 4V heads so the ports will be off. Thats not to say you could not fill the manifolds ports and blend them to fit it the right way. You should be able to get the spacers direct from the CHI suppliers . That's where I got mine when I bought the heads. The plates are held to the heads with two screws each and the end rails with three roll pins each they fit very well.
