Despite the venue change, I'll be there. I've registered and already decided I'll give it a shot this year, regardless of the venue.

Now all I have to do is pull and rebuild my engine, seal my gas tank, safety wire and detail my ZF, gut and refinish my mufflers, and put it all back together before Concorso.

And, if they do a poor job of it at the Marina airport, then I'll vote with my feet (and my wallet).

Cheers!
Garth
If you read the news blurb I posted, you'll find a quote from the Marina City Manager saying they know they have to make the airport a world class venue for this event. This sounds to me like they plan on doing some quick renovation out there. I'll also remind you that our paddock at the Blackhorse Golf Course did not have one single tree in it. No shade. So if the airport has no trees, that's not a change for the worse, that's just status quo.

Reservation Road is the road that leads directly to the motel where Pantera International books its rooms. It connects with Monterey Road, the road people traditionally drove into Monterey on from Salinas. I have driven Reservation Road several times, it is every bit as good a road as Monterey Road.

The Wadsworths are smart people, they have organized this event since day 1. If they chose the Marina Airport for their event, it had to have been the best choice in their minds. I'm sure they are aware if the event is held at a shoddy air field, they will piss everyone off & there will be no 2009 Concorso. I seriously doubt they want that to happen. Notice how the Marina City Manager mentions the importance of making a good first impression with attendees this year. You know that's on everyone's mind.

If we as a group stand in the middle of our paddock this year, look around us at dry brown foliage and a cracked decaying air strip, then we can agree as a group that the Concorso is dead. But I think we need to be open minded instead of prejudiced, and not assume the worst without any evidence. I think we should give the Wadsworths & the City of Marina the benefit of the doubt this first time around at the new venue, show up in force, and see how good of a job they do. Then we can base our decision to attend in 2009 on fact and not conjecture.

The DeTomaso hobby needs to have an impact at the Concorso, to keep our hobby vital and thriving. Or else DeTomaso ownership will slowly fade into history. So please, lets stop all this negative talk. I appreciate the enthusiasm of Garth and others who will show up and help us make an impact on the concorso for our marque. I've never seen a gathering of Pantera owners where people didn't have a good time. I would like to see as many people as possible show up, because you love Panteras and because you love the hobby.

Yeah really guys, what a bunch of sad statements. Where's the silver lining? It looks like those who are in charge needed to find a long term solution for the venue - and they will likely invest in it.

Concorso for me was truly awesome at Blackhorse, even though it was cramped, hot, with no shade, impossible to get to in traffic and with no place to park.

And I'm sure it will be again. Do you really think all those prancing horses and raging bulls and their prissy owners wanna sit on some baked asphalt runway? You can be sure it will become a great venue, even if it takes a little time.

We need to support it. If I was 6 hours away, instead of 6 days, I'd jump in the cat and hit the road in a NY minute.
Okay points taken....they are 'innocent until proven guilty' but you guys will have to hold the fort and report back as I can't attend anyway this year, I'm heading out to New Mexico on 2 week wilderness backpack trip with a local Boy Scout Troop.
I would like to believe that it will turn out good. Although this is pretty disappointing for me as I was set to go this year with my wife, my wife is a neurologist who has precious little time to do anything so indulging me by being stuck on an air strip with a bunch of cars is no way to spend a weekend together. I was genuinely looking forward to Monterey and the whole experience. I would hope they will find a better solution as this sounds anything but exclusive and a celebration of all things Italian. And I'm not even Italian!!
Baking on the asphalt aside, George is right, Concorso really is all about the cars and the people (the Lambo babes in specific Big Grin ). I will miss the beautiful natural setting with grass and trees and parking in shade beside a McLaren F1 (happened in 2005) but I have faith in the organizers judgement. They had to move and have a lot to lose if this venue doesn't work out. I won't be there this year either, but will be looking at the reports because I plan to be there again in 2009.

I've spoken with the Concorso organizers specifically about the new venue. I voiced everyone's concerns expressed here.

What I learned is that the Concorso shall be held on a very large 100% concrete surface, approximately square in dimensions. No grass, but no dirt either. The new venue will be much larger than the old one, so that's one big concrete pad! They were evasive about what exactly they are going to do with this concrete pad (they have reasons for being hush hush), but they assured me they expect everyone to be impressed with what they have planned.

The new venue shall allow them choices in displaying the cars, decorating, erecting guest acomodations, arranging the paddocks, and placing the vendors they never had before.

You are in SoCal, just a couple hours from Monterey, and you want a trailer?
Why? Are you bringing a boat? Big Grin

Ha, no boat Larry, I get sea sick. Da black car needs a trailer...don't want to risk jail by letting it loose on PCH. Monterey is about 7-8 hours from OC normal speed, but yes 2 hours in a Pantera, and add 10 hours including jail bail from da wife. Can't resist the right foot.
