Does anyone know how many people have signed up for the June event in Reno? How many Panteras are expected to be driven there? I am getting mine ready for the trip which will also include a side trip before the event. It should make it about 1100 or 1200 miles one way. This shouldn't be a long distance award drive, but still a pretty good drive in a Pantera in June.

When I checked about the sign-ups with Judy McCartney a few weeks ago, we were ahead of last year. Judy also said that we have more spouses this year too, which I attribute to having events with a broader appeal. (There are still plenty of events for us knuckle-daggers too.) I'll circle back with Judy to get updated numbers.

PI will again be sponsoring the go-kart event. This year's go-kart facilities are even better, so it should be a great event. Now, if I can just get my big self behind the wheel ...

The big question for me is, how many Panteras are going to be driven to this event given the fact that it is going to be much warmer and for many of us much further than Las Vegas. I am driving my Pantera and will be testing some upgrades that I did to the car since the Las Vegas event last year.

While it may well be true the drive there will be in warmer times, Reno as a destination is historically cooler in mid June than LV is in late April/early May. (Thanks to the web and historical weather collections.)

I know my Pantera does just fine at highway speeds, and only starts the creeping temp increases when stuck in city traffic.

And I still believe that one of our temp problems is the fact we DO have a temp gauge. We are so used to just idiot gauges that when we see real-world temperatures, it gets the the old nervous-nellie reaction going.

A 50/50 antifreeze mix raises the boiling temp to 265. With good hoses, tight clamps and working fans, even if the water temp does rise to 220 or more, your Pantera is not going to explode in a geyser of steam and scalding fluid.

I wasn't concerned about my Pantera over heating on the trip even if we get into stop and go driving. My last upgrade to the car tested out quite well last year and the car did great at 105 degrees ambient temperature and driving it in stop and go traffic. There are other owners that I know that do have a concern about the heat and at best a Pantera air conditioning system isn't all that good when it is about 100 degrees outside. Reno is pretty nice in early June, but getting there from southeastern Arizona is a bit of a drive through some pretty warm areas.

I am going to this event and driving the Pantera. The point that I am trying to make is how many others are going to drive their Pantera? It would be nice to see the parking lot full of Panteras like the old days in Las Vegas.

YES, it would be nice.

But not going to happen.

Economy is going to be a BIG monkey wrench is events like this for the foreseeable future.

BUt whether we have 50 cars, or 150, the times are good, the cars are great, and the people are the best.

2511 will be there. Of course, as Motorsports Director, I'll be out at the track all day, both days. But I'll be on the street display Saturday and hopefully the dinner Friday.

We are all a bit older as are the cars, so the days of 1,000+ people and 600 cars that we had 20 years ago are not coming back. However, with 300+ people and 100+ cars, this will the biggest and most fun Pantera event of the year.

From the street display in the heart of Reno to the cars in the ballroom to the multitude of driving events in the twisties to the Harris reception to the uber tech session to the PI go-karts to the two-day track event on a great track to the ... well, you get the idea. It's a four plus days of Woodstock for Panteras. Feel the love.

This will mark the twentieth consecutive year that we have driven the Pantera to this yealy event. One trip was also made to Reno in it, so that year we had two events that we drove the car to. This event to us is for the many friends that we have made in POCA though the years. I just wished that more people would drive their Panteras to them. I know everyone is getting older, but our Pantera seems to be running better with age. Must be all those little tweeks I did to it through the years. Too bad the fuel injection system will have to wait until next year.
