Crack in head

Bad spot for a crack. That stud can pull out now. Welding cast iron is a art and it may not keep the crack from coming back IMO.

Pull the head and have somebody who knows what they're doing dress the crack & braze it. By dressing the crack I mean to grind a groove in the casting where the crack is. Brazing is very tough stuff, it will be stronger than the surrounding cast iron. The head should be OK.

Wow, Bet that ruined your day. How common is cracking there ? Should we all be running stud girdles or shaft rockers to take some load off that area ?

I never suspected that to be a high load area, who knew? I will take Cowboys advise and have it brazed.

I have mig welded with stainless steel ... cast iron but first I heat the area with a torch then let it cool real slow. Works like a charm and strong.
