When I replaced the windshield in my car 20 years ago it was too large. When the layers were laminated they slipped so it was about 1/8" too large. The glass installer said he could try to grind it but could not guarantee that it would not break. The vendor said go ahead and try it and if it broke he would send me another one. The installer actually used a glass cutter and scribed a cut line around the glass. He then poured alcohol on the scribes and lit them on fire. After the flames burned away he used a nibbler and went around the edge nibbling off small pieces until he had done the whole perimeter. Then installed the glass. The whole thing took a couple of hours.
