Does Anyone Know What Mirrors These Are...

I am surprised as there is so little documentation(next to none) about this type of side mirror.

the best I have found so far is what looks same (but passenger side) and the add offers no more about what it is from either. except it may have been a ford dealer installed option versus an OEM

Thanks for that link - I'll keep an eye on it. I am pretty sure it is the same mirror (based on the shape of the base, and the rectangular cutout) - too bad it's the wrong side!

From the photos of the eBay mirror, I fail to see that mirror as being side-specific.

Not sure of your mirror from the photos. Black paint tends to obscure things.

I am thinking that most OEM mirrors would have some sort of casting or part number on them.

Therefore, I'm guessing your mirror is one of a pair of aftermarket mirrors of the period.

There are original and repo Mustang sport mirrors with a very similar shape. Driver's side is remote cable-controlled, with the RH being manual as is yours.

I have been thinking about asking whether or not my mirrors were original or not. Mine look like Rocky's

Just to see If I could find any numbers on mine I just took them off (with out marking) and I now can not tell which is which!

the base plate on the drivers door had a third hole drilled like maybe the original mirror had been removed (but the adjustments in the base could have used that hole though).

I found "40202" case into the base of both mirrors

Chuck you are correct those aren't Ford mirrors. I can tell by the mounting system. If those were Ford parts they'd have the "Ford Oval" logo cast or molded into them somewhere. I'll bet those don't.

The sport mirrors most often installed on the Pantera by Lincoln dealers were the Mercury Cougar sport mirrors. That's what's on 6018. They have a very "up-right" mounting base, therefore the mirrors hug the window glass very closely which limits the rearward view the mirror can provide. I've also seen Pinto, Maverick and Mustang II sport mirrors used. They all use a similar mounting system using a spindly base and 2 sheet metal screws.

Off topic a little bit, I have a hot tip for those interested in period correct Ford mirrors. Sport mirrors were also optional for the 72 - 76 Torinos. Those sport mirrors mount on the side of the door, not the top edge along the window. They hang out a bit away from the door and therefore provide a better rearward view. They mount with hidden studs built into a sturdier base instead of sheet metal screws that are always loosening with the other mirrors. This results in the mirrors being mounted more solidly and sturdier than the Cougar/Mustang mirrors and to my eyes the difference in the mounting base design makes the mirrors more attractive.

george is right. i was a lincoln mercury dealer for 45 years and very familiar with cougar mirrors and these are not cougar mirrors. they are after market, mike...

Thanks for the tips, and the sleuthing. I swapped sides on my mirrors, and the passenger side fits the drivers side just fine.

I would say yours are exactly the same as mine.

The way to get them apart is to remove the two screws that go in vertically - then the entire mirror and swivel assembly will slide out - it's on a track, and those screws lock it in place.

Once that is out, the other screws align the ball joint. You will see once the mirror is out.

In your picture, it's hard to tell, but it looks like your splined shaft that pokes into the mirror head may be sliding out - that's what happened to mine. If that is loose in ANY WAY - I suggest you lock it in there (lock-tite, epoxy, or something...).

Don't do what I did!

PS. JFB - It looks like you are missing the gasket and base.

Here's a picture. My mirror bolts to a sheet metal bracket that is mounted on top of the gasket.

My bracket and gasket are identical to yours. I just left them on the door. the differance is between the mounting positions, mine is a lot more foward. I guess measuring the distance between the bolt holes could be done to verify

finding that "40202" was the trick to finding the ones available

I find it interesting that we have the same after market mirrors. I was planning on keeping them (I like their looks), but now that King and George have identified them as not something the dealer would install, I might consider going back witht he chrome mustang style. (but not for sale yet)

are you planning on getting the $13 one?

I found one on eBay (thanks to JFB's link - Thanks, buddy!)

I will follow up with a couple of pictures after I receive it, and get a chance to check it out.

It looks like both mirrors will need a coat of paint to get them to match and get the bugs / scratches off my existing one...
