I heard a rumor that the dogbone air cleaners don't flow well and will end up killing some top-end horsepower. Does anybody have dyno proof to that rumor or is it bull?
Its bull. Dyno runs I've read about in the past show almost no change whatsoever. There was a post back in '05 that mentioned a dyno test that showed a 2 hp loss.
Cost me 13 RWHP on a 393 stroker. NOT because of the filter restriction (there is more than enough filter surface area), it's because the top sits too close to the carb opening, restricting air flow. This can be corrected with a spacer but I never verified the spacer correction on a dyno. Will
I think it was the guys down in Texas that ran dyno tests. John Taphorn? Anyway, it was a reliable source and they busted the myth of the dog-bone air cleaner. I think they ran a spacer to fix the problem Will mentions, but don't remember the details.
