Exhaust blockage

Was troubleshooting a rattle in the exhaust on my wife's Subaru. Sounded like one of the mufflers. Had noticed the left muffler had less exhaust coming out prior to this. Pulled the muffler off and found about a quart of water in it. Ah, so this explains the rattle (probably rusted) and the week exhaust. Put on the new muffler and the exhaust still was significantly less than the right muffler. Pulled out the trust boroscope and found this stuff jammed in the exhaust pipe between the Y-pipe and the inlet to the muffler. Upstream of the Y-pipe is the resonator. The exhaust system looked like it had never been replaced. Anyone have any idea what this is?

Yes it looks like fiberglass batting.

In the past, it has not been uncommon for race tracks to require a maximum noise from a cars exhaust system on "club open track days".

The tracks themselves in some cases are only allowed a certain amount of unmuffled events and they save those for the big money making events.


Now I have not as yet seen fiberglass batting stuffed into exhaust systems but I have seen steel wool stuffed in there to reduce the exhaust level to the legal accepted level on the drive by meter.


I have heard rumors that "in the old days" potatoes were stuffed into peoples exhaust systems when the car was parked which made the car sporadically difficult to start and keep the engine running.


The answer is, that fiberglass doesn't belong in there and the question really is, why is it in there?

Precisely. And how long has it been in there? As far as I can tell the car still had the factory exhaust. Had to cut the bolts off the flange. The mufflers still said "Subaru".
