Gas strut strength

I bought 2 new struts from SGS Engineering in the UK. From the force range versus rod diameter you have quoted it looks to me like you may have already looked on their website. The struts are the 10mm rod spec with 22mm housing, they look pretty similar to the original parts that I sent to SGS to measure. I had them gassed up to 350N to suit an early car with no wing, they work OK but a little bit more force would probably be an improvement. They charged me £52 with VAT and postage.

Peter, mine are 500N no wing and they can hold the deck open even when driving! (how do I know that?, dont ask)

Length of strut without eyes 360mm and stroke is 150mm, 8mm rod.

Hi Peter, luckily my originals are in good order but I have been warned that if changing be careful not to put too powerful a strut on as they can distort the rear deck at the point they attach to it!

Ok, good one I'll keep that in mind when I have to replace mine

I was told the old struts could have their springs reshimmed to get them working again.

so I stripped one down today.

NO SPRING just oil for damping and gas for lifting.

no accès to re gas either so I suppose they are scrap, a shame for they are in excellent condition.

I had my originals regassed and reconditioned by a local guy who does them for all the new style.

Are there pics of the internals in those 19 pages?

or suggestions of how to get the originals working again?

Sorry Peter, I just thought it was more background info for you to research.

The info suggests that you can get the originals rebuilt and recharged, with varying degrees of satisfaction on how long they held gas.

Obviously over years topics get repeated and often there is a wealth of info available to search. The "sticky" idea is to help people find that info more easily when they need it.

Joules I am now on a different tack,

I have ordered a new pair of struts from SGS Engineering and have asked them to be set at 400N

They are 22mm dia with a 10mm rod and the rod end is easily removable for me to make a top spacer when I sit the new strut inside my old body.

Well thats the plan, fingers crossed, and thanks for your help too regards Peter.

That's an interesting approach to making new struts look stock, please post photos as you work through it.
