Both the GT5 and GT5S cars are quite rare. Arguably, there are perhaps between fifty to sixty GT5S cars in the United States. There are a very small number of GT5 cars in the United States as well. Depending upon whom you rely on for statistics, Ford imported about 2600 to three thousand Panteras during 1970 and 1974. Additional cars for those years have come in through private importation.

If you want a real GT5 you must be prepared to travel to see it immediately and write a check when you find one. Assuming all the usual caveats on purchasing any Pantera are met, you will likely hve to act, rather than debate, consider and shop around. Because so few GT5S and GT5 cars are here, there is no market size as with the older cars, which means it is a sellers market. I found my car by searching for four months, twice daily morning and night, using PI, Hall, Byers Bros., Pantera Performance, Lance Nist, Cory Gheling, other vendors, Car Trader Online, Hemmings and several other Exotic and Collector car sites.
However, you can buy one of the older cars any day of the week and have perhaps sixty to choose from on any given day. Pricing seems to be around $55,000 and up for a very clean GT5 car. Best of luck.

Cozman,

There was a low milage Red 1985 GT5 for sale at Bently of Long Island some six months back, and another was for sale on he west coast. I believe it was a burgundy car, 13k miles or so with gold wheels a year ago. Asking prices were about 55k and 52k or so. There is another GT5 in Atlanta and I had some business with the owner so there are a number of them around. Since Amerisport brought in GT5S model, and they were the largest single "manufacturer" importer we have better numbers on the GT5S model than we do with the GT5.

The car you mention on E Bay is a GT5S, not a GT5 model, which was the subject of DetroitDeTomaso's original line of inquiry.
The owner of the E bay GT5S has been asking 80K fo his car. I noticed all the Prospective bidders are "private", undisclosed, so it begs the question of who is really bidding for the car?
If I am not mistaken, GT5's were only produced in 1980, 81, 82 and only numbered 300 in production.

I could be wrong, from from what I have been able to tell and the serials numbers assigned begining and ending with, this is what I have discovered so far.

I know another guy in Canada that has an original GT5 as well, his serial number is 09181 and his is a 1981.

I have heard that the serial numbers started at 09000 and ended with 09300.
Until the very last Pantera was produced, DeTomaso would build whatever the customer wanted... I know of at least one factory GTS built in 1989 - no flares, no wide body, looks identical to a 1972 GTS...

To that end, they continued to build both GT5 and GT5-S cars until the end. I've seen a 1987 GT5, Thomas Tornblum's is a 1984, and I think there are a handful of 1988's too... This makes it all the harder to know exact numbers of any model.
Cozman. I think you were referring to me when you mentioned the 09181 in Canada. We have spoken a few times and I am the one with the 1981 #09182 in Atlanta. I have yet to come across another 1981. Just an FYI on the amount made per year based on VIN #'s. You have a 1980 #0978 and there is a 1983 model on the "for sale" board that is #09195.that means that there were aprox. under 20 manufactured in 3 years.
Andre,
DeTomaso made standard Panteras, GTS Panteras, GT5 Panteras during over the years and differing models during the period you mentioned. It has been shown that VIN numbers were NOT always issued in sequence or order of construction. We can make "guestimates" on the number made of a certain model, but unless DeTomaso or someone else goes through the factory records, we will not have an accurate listing of type manufactured in any given year. Charlie McCall's comments above are on the money. I know of a 1989 GT5S ordered and made without the lower front spoiler typical of GT5S cars. It is more like a standard European Pantera front end.
Percy Hill
Percy,

I never realized that the VIN #'s were not in order and that panteras of that era were all made that differently. Thank you for the information.

Deeb, I'm sorry for the confusion. I am from Atlanta not Canada. I was thinking that Cozman confused me with someone from Canada. I may be wrong

Out of curiosity, does anyone know of any other 1981's in existance?

Andre
Yes, I was Andre. Thank you for the correction. It's a bi*ch getting old.
Hope all is well buddy.

Sorry Andre, but there is someone from Montreal named Andre Perry, and a well known Montreal dealer did sell quite few Panteras (two to me) along with a few GT5s.

I looked through my list of GT5 VIN #s and came across these. I have not found any 1981 models so far.

Deeb: It appears you are keeping records. So for the record here are two more. I own 1989 GT5-S no. 9492. The car is located in Ft. Myers, Fl. GutsGossett@aol.com owns 1989 GT5-S no. 9494. He is located in Jupiter, Fl. He has documentation from factory that his was the last Pantera imported into the US. I know of two other GT5-S cars in Fl. One is owned by Percy.hill@raymondjames.com. The other is owned by Marino Perna the owner of Pantera East. I do not know the particulars on either of these cars.

I looked at your website. Your car is beautiful.

Regards, Jay
David, you can add 1986 GT5-S, ending vin# 09425, owned by Percy Hill in Naples, FL.

Keep up the good work.

Andre Perry owned a recording studio here. Always wondered what happened to him...

Saw your pics. Nice car. Nice louvered fenders! I've added you to the list. Let me know if you want it and I'll be glad to send the doc.

The list starts at #1116 - 1971. I got most of the info from POCA & PI and from "for sale" ads I've come across over the years - but it is just a start. I'm sure much more detailed lists exist somewhere.

Deeb,

Thanks for the compliments on my car. Gary Hall told me that the louvered fenders were only offered as an option on 1980 and 1981 cars. I find that interesting if it is true? I would love to have the list if it is not too much trouble. My email is touche808@aol.com

Thanks

Andre

Hi all.

I'm the new owner of the 1986 GT5-S Pavesi Targa #9434. My name is Michael Elio and I live in New York City.

I've been following this car since 1995 when it was an unreachable dream. I'm glad to report that the dream is finally realized, AND I'm awake to enjoy it!

I've been a member of P.I. for over 10 years now, and a member of this website for 2 or 3 years. I also have a 1974 Pantera that I've owned since'98.

I look forward to seeing you all at the shows and events on the east coast next year.

Be Well!
Michael
