Has anyone used one the Hella hazard switches on a car originally
equipped with a late style hazard switch (the type with a resistor
on the back, p/n D26Y-13A350A)? My switch broke (the button
popped out) and another Pantera owner was kind enough to send me
an extra he got from Johnny Woods. This switch is not a direct
replacement (smaller bezel diameter, snaps in rather than held
in by washer and nut, etc.).

SOBill has two sets of hazard wiring diagrams, one "early" and
one "late" with different wiring hookups. The numbering on the
early one matches the Hella switch as well as the numbering on
the original. I replaced the switch on my other Pantera with
one from PPC and the wiring diagram that came with it is the
same as SOBill's early one except the blue and blue/black wires
are reversed.

When I wire it up per the diagram, it doesn't work. Reversing
the blue and blue/black wires doesn't make it work either.
Reversing the yellow and yellow/black wires does make the flasher
work (which is odd since the the PPC diagram says they are bridged
together in the wire loom) but the center console instrument
lights are always lit, whether or not the headlights are on or
the dimmer is on min or max. If I also reverse the red and black
wires, the center console lights go out but will not come on with
the headlights.

I put my old switch back in and the center console lights don't
work with it either, though I believe it did before. I checked
the fuses and none seem to be blown. Could it be the dimmer
switch? It's odd that reversing the red and black wires would
make them light if the dimmer was bad.

Any help is appreciated. BTW, my car is a 1974 L model.

Correction. My original switch is a late style with resistor
and the numbering matches SOBill's late hazard diagram (yellow/black
wire to blade 59d). The new switch has numbering for the early
switch (yellow black to 30b). Looks like this place has the
correct switch for $47.95:

p/n 61 31 1 356 193 Hazard Light Switch - with resistor - 8 pin

The part interchanges with a 1975 BMW 2002. The only Pantera
vendors I could find with the parts listed online are $30 to $40
more expensive and they don't specifically state which version
of the switch (with or without resistor).

I'm not sure if it is related but I don't appear to have brake lights. No one was around so I had to prop the pedal so maybe I just didn't have the pedal depressed far enough. All other
lights appear to work now that I replaced the rear sidemarker lamps and
cleaned the terminals. The flasher flashes more quickly when the turn signal
is indicating a left turn. The front turn signal does not light then.

Thanks

Dan,
The brake lights are not part of the flasher and turn signal circuit.

The yellow/blk and black wires are only for the light inside the flasher switch. You don't need to connect either to make the flasher work. The resistor is just to make the flasher light dim when the lights are on. The flasher light will be bright when the flasher switch is "on".

When it got dark, I was able to verify the brake lights are indeed
coming on. The only external light that appears to be non-functional
is the front drivers turn signal does not blink. I verified the bulb
is good by swapping side-to-side. Not sure if the problem is in the
socket or wiring.

Thanks. I ordered the proper style replacement switch this morning.
I'd like to drive the car tomorrow to an event so I may try to wire up
the other switch again.
