Good Afternoon:
I have a holley carb with sight windows instead of plugs. I know the fuel level for plugs should just barely be at the plug level (tiny trickle of fuel). What should the level be on the sight glass windows? Right now my front glass shows fuel 1/2 way up the window and my rear glass shows 3/4 way up the window. I am guessing that these need to be below the window like a sight plug. If so, how many turns to get to the bottom do you suggest?

Also, can I adjust the floats down while the bowl is full of fuel?

Thank You!

Yes, you usually need to adjust the float level when you put a carb on a Pantera because the Pantera engine sits pretty level compared to the normal engine position. Notice that the carb is not level and is tilted forward. That might be the root cause of your staling problem. At that level you may have fuel sloshing out of the vents when you are stopping, even a slow stop.

You make the external adjustment ¼ turn at a time then start and run the car for awhile for the fuel level to adjust. Be aware that fuel will spray out when you make the adjustment.

Hope to see you soon at the Donut Shop with your Pantera?

Thanks Mike. I had heard tale that you can't lower the float bowls when the car is running or too full of fuel as you risk issues with teh needle but that you run the car when you are raising float bowls. Is this your understanding?

As for the Saturday, I am having Gran Turismo align the car on Monday and I have to fix my rear brakelight switch then she should "knock on wood" be road worthy!
I would not adjust it with the car running because of the fuel that leaks out as you make the adjustment. Make an adjustment, clean up the fuel, start the engine, then run it for a few min to burn down some of the fuel and watch the fuel level. If is needs more shut it off and readjust again and then go through the run cycle again.

Apparently the mall businesses complained about the cars using all the mall parking and they closed it down. I understand that this Sunday will be the last event. The same thing happened the last time a similar event in that area was doing well. I guess we can be thankful that the Donut Derelicts event is inside the beltway and doesn’t attract 500 cars. We only have room for about 200. But we do have much fun and the Donuts are awesome!!

Tuning the float level
"On Holleys this adjustment is very easy as it can be done without dismantling. With the engine idling take out the sight plug on the side of the fuel bowl. Be ready with a rag to catch the fuel that might run out if the float level is too high. With the sight plug removed, use a big screwdriver and a 5/8”/16mm wrench to adjust (the screw should just be loosened, adjustment is done on the nut). Adjust so that fuel is up to the level of the sight plug hole and just slowly trickles out. Note that if the level is too high and you adjust down, you have to wait until the fuel is consumed or trickled out, which can be an issue especially on the secondary fuel bowl. Also note that if you adjust down too low the nut loses its grip on the float bolt and when you try to get it back up it won’t work. In that situation, stop the engine, take off the screw and nut entirely and screw the float bolt up with your fingers. You may need a new gasket after doing this.
When both floats are adjusted as specified above, you can screw in the sight plugs."

On Holleys I take out the sight plugs even though they are supposed to be see-through, too difficult to see. On the Summit carb on my Longchamp the sight holes are bigger and with glass instead of plastic, gives perfect vision and no fuel spill needed.
