Hood latch cable/emergency release

The hood latch cable broke yesterday on #4044, my 1973L model. No big emergency,it broke right at the handle inside the car. My question is what to do. Nobody(the vendors) seems to have one. Pim told me to make one out of a lawnmower cable...........I thought that I'd make one from twisted cable,much more durable.I also got a look at a NOS emergency release,it's a piece of fishing line tied around a grommet!I'm thinking of making that out of small diameter twisted cable as well.Any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated.

THAT IS WHY I AM SAVING MY OLD HARLEY THROTTLE CABLES, THEY'ER TWISTED STEEL. YOU COULD ALSO USE BICYCLE BRAKE CABLES. AND IF YOU HAVE AN "ORCHARD SUPPLY HARDWARE" STORE IN YOUR AREA, THEY CARRY NEW VERY FINE SIZE TWISTED STEEL CABLE. YOUR IDEA IS A GOOD ONE, REPLACE THAT EMERGENCY FISHING LINE RELEASE WHILE YOU CAN STILL OPEN THE HOOD. REGARDS, MARLIN.

Early Panteras were modified via TSP Bulletin #9 Article 64, where Ford ordered its dealers to add an "Emergency Release Cable" to Panteras up to mid 1973. Your car was built in July '72 so it should have been modified under warranty (long gone now). Ford's final fix for '73-74 cars was to reverse the screws holding the front grille in so if the cable broke, you could unscrew the grille from outside, reach in & unbolt the hood hinges and remove the whole hood. Good luck if you run an air dam.... I like the early fix- it added a 10" length of braided cable to the latch, strung it thru a hole to be drilled in the pedal box with a washer or knob attached to the cable. The knob hung just above the gas pedal & could be pulled to release the latch in emergencies. Quick & simple.
