Im using Fel Pro # 1228 gasket on CHI heads and Blue Thunder intake. After a couple years use its sucking a little oil into the right bank. It only smokes with a warmed up engine. Removed the intake and the gaskets are all flatened out like they "should" be sealing. I can see oil film in one of the head ports. Anyone know of a better gasket ?

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

Check the bottom of the intake manifold for a crack or a casting pit that goes through into an intake runner. An intake vacuum leak check could have been done before the intake manifold was removed. It wouldn't tell you where the leak was, but it would point you towards or away from the intake.

I hope that's not a crack at the lower left of your intake port.

John,

No, thats not a crack, just a funny spot in the pic. I dont see any flaws that would create a leak. Wish I could get a closer pic but my little camera wont do it. This Fel Pro gasket lasted a good 2 years. Dan Jones recommends Victor Reinz gaskets. If I can find the Victor gasket, I will try it this time.

Mike, re your oil film in the port, are you sure the valve stem seals are good? FWIW, stock 'seals' really aren't- they're neoprene umbrellas that ride up/down with the valve & let oil run down the valve stems, if one of the small drainback ports partially plugs up & allows oil levels to rise in the rocker covers. A high pressure or high vol oil pump will also cause this from pumping too much oil upstairs, as will long term valve guide wear. The stock rubber umbrellas also harden and disintegrate with time, eliminating what little 'sealing' they do.
When I rebuilt the 351-C, I installed all-teflon 'Perfect Circle' valve stem seals- now in their 20th year and no leakage.
Mark,

Yes, I laid the intake on there without gaskets. Started 6 bolts. It lays right down in there and the angles are right on.
Now for the bad part-----I just fired it up....Sounds great but still smokes. Man im bummed. I thought I was getting caught up on my Pantera winter projects. I will pull the intake again and have a look. If I dont see anything, I guess the engine will be coming out.
