I was in the process of detailing the engine bay(Since my BIG) back window is out and took out the pressure tank and holding tank and was wondering of they are stainless or chromed? I had some small spots of rust on the tank but the rust seems to come off the more I buff them. Usually chrome won't do this if it's rusty. Are these tanks stainless steel?

The tanks are neither chrome or aluminum. My mechanic recognised the material but I have forgotten the name of it now. (A mind like a steel sieve.)

In fact, mine developed pinholes in them. We had them sent to a radiator shop for repair and the radiator folks were rather iffy as to whether the welds would hold given the material.
Stock tanks were mild steel, painted black. But stainless aftermarket tanks have been available for many years, as have chrome or nickel-plated stockers and even aluminum. Try a magnet- if its magnetic, they're plated stockers, and could be chrome, nickel or cadmium plate. If its not magnetic, then it could literally be anything.
Thanks., I was debating to plate them in nickle and then clearing them with high-temp clear. They are in great shape. Another idea was to paint them in a different color to make them stand out more. (Argent color) or a high temp cast color.
Another question.... Can I take out the smaller pressure tank without cutting the hoses off? Are hoses available or is there something else i can use.? One more question. What does the smaller round blue 'basket" do. I know it goes to the gas tank to vent off fumes., is that all it's there for? OK maybe one more question...Where can I get a new ga tank filler neck hose (rubber)? thanks, guy
