looking for a value on a '71

Hello,
Join the hunt for a great car that costs less than $25,000.00. They are hard to find. I am suspicious of the welding you describe, especially if it is less than craftsman quality. Why was there panel work/replacement? Was the car involved in a collision? Your description does not mention rust or the ZF condition. These are the two areas you need to verify or your Pantera experience can turn into a bigger expenditure than a divorcee seeking alimony. Check the title also to determine if the car is a salvage car. Check out the history of the vehicle as far as you can tell. Take a test drive and then report how the ZF shifts, etc. to our ZF expert, Lloyd Butfoy in the ZF forum. If you are not an expert in evaluating body work, hire somebody who is knowledgeable to examine and report on condition. If the car you describe is not a salvage title, no rust and strong ZF, try to purchase it for $20-25K maximum. Put up an ad for cars wanted in our forum and see what else surfaces since this car you describe causes me concern. Let us know what you decide to do because many of our site visitors are trying to find cars just like you are and we would like them to know what is out there on the market so that they don't waste their time.

I took it for a test drive, the ZF was nice and tight, smooth shifting and instant response to acceleration. My biggest problem is trying to fit into the car(6'4"), I am definately thinking I would have to replace the original drivers seat with something else. As far as rust, the only signs of rust were on the brake components under the hood, splitter manifold and mounting hardware. I did notice that someone had tried to jack the car up a few times(quite a few)on the sheet metal egdes under the car, folding some of them over. The current owner doesn't know anything about the front end damage, but I will ask if it has a salvage title.
I found the the lap inside the front wheel well, the top of the fender is smoothed over with filler I'm sure. it was kind of wet out the night I looked at it, I am just trying to figure out if I want to go back for another look.

There are a few interesting buys out there in cyberworld now. Check out e-bay, there's a yellow '71 at $13,000 (looks like it needs quite a bit of work), a red '72 at $17,875 (looks nice!) & a red '73 at $22,000 (looks very nice!). I believe that Prestige Motors in Madison Heights, Michigan has a red '72 for $23,000 (www.prestigemotorsltd.com). Good luck in your search!

I forgot to add -- I'm 6'1" & have a 13" steering wheel fitted, it helps out a lot! You can install a 12" wheel if necessary to help you "fit" your car.

I am also contemplating a future Pantera purchase but like yourself head room is a big issue. A small steering wheel is good but leg room is not my problem. I believe you have a couple of options, get a seat that is "on the floor" or drop the floor pans. I have been advised against dropping the floor pans and would like to hear others opinions on this. I have found a '73 on a lot for sale that fits me perfect. It appears stock but I think I will investigate further to understand why there is so much head room. If you are in Southern California I can tell you where it is if you would like to try it on for size.

The Pantera is on the lot of Family Toyota in San Juan Capistrano. Last time I saw a price they were asking over 40k. Needless to say it has been there a while.
Most of the time I see it sitting outside.

Thanks I also saw that car about 6 months ago I test drove it I also fit well in the car but I have yet to fit in two cars the same seems like there all a little different by the way that car popped out of gear on me as I was accelerating.
