Car show awards are popularity contest. There are a few exceptions with real discriminating judging by a panel where specific items on cars are judged by specific people but in general, that is not the case.

If you are not part of the "in group" you are not a contender. The best car shows (unless serious concourses, even then partly political) are car shows without awards!
Right. I have an acquaintance who's been trying to get a trophy from Pebble Beach Concours for 20 years. He has a chain drive 1911 Buick. Each year he takes the car to the Concours, loses and brings it home to 'correct the flaws'- which are different each year. He's not a billionaire- he runs a scrap metal yard in San Jose, CA and has a kind of abrasive attitude, so I suspect that most his problem is not the Buick.
I had mine entered one time in the "foriegn sports" category.
Came in 2nd place. The winner. A 1964 plymouth barracuda. His car was a stunning restoration BUT when I asked how this was a "foriegn sports" I was told he could enter it in any category he wanted.

That's when I gave up on car show awards.
I only go now to hang out with my car buddy friends.
Don't give a crap about the judging.

When I was younger, the attention my car got me was appreciated. Not any more, I'd rather drive in an invisibility bubble, but that's just me. About being judged by others, I've won several prices with different cars (none for breakdancing!), and also lost to absolute dogs IMHO. So that's not very satisfactory. I've come to the conclusion that winning prices judged by laymen is of no value to me. But being judged by your peers is of value to me. So if a group of Pantera owners voted my Pantera best, it would mean a lot to me. Will probably never happen. The trophy I'm most proud of is the 2nd price for best 1st gen Camaro I won when driving to Sweden and participating in their Camaro-show. Judged by my peers...

YMMV Wink

I took the MG to a car show where they had several judges who judged specific items. One judge judged the paint, one for under body, one for engine bay, one for trunk, one for interior, one for overall construction and appearance.

I competed in the foreign car category and got first place over a couple dozen "Fast 'N Furious" ricer wanabes.

I got to admit, that was fun!
