On the topic of my mis-firing engine. I'm just about to pop the new plugs in but would like to jump one step ahead and ask the question as to what other things would be worth looking at before I call in the 'A team'.

I always think this is the best time to really get to know your car.
Besides not idling as smoothly as normal, the car really begins to mis-fire once you apply the gas. Strangely enougth, the wiper blades seem to work slowly but I do not know if this is related to the fault.
I suppose it could be any of the usuals like condenser, coil and leads. I don't think it could be timeing or fuel as the problem occured almost instantly whilst in traffic which tends to suggest an electrical breakdown caused by heat.
you could say that replacing all these items could be deamed a useful service, especially when you don't know the last time it was carried out.

I had a similar mis fire, After I replaced coil cap rotor wires. I replaced the plugs and gapped them at .050 That solved my problem. I run a MSD 6a box. It likes the big gap. I was surprized it was as simple as just the plug and gaps. The only thing that fixed it was the plugs. Of course if you have a low voltage condition, you can expect a miss. you should have over 13 volts at the batt while engine running if your alt is putting out correctly.
I had this problem, too. Replacing plugs, points, condensor, rotor, cap, and wires helped me to realize me the problem was in the carburetor. I was able to adjust out most of the part-throttle misfiring, but it still stumbles on full throttle. I have a replacement carb on order. And a fresh new ignition system.
Backfiring or popping on deceleration can be indicative of a lean mixture, among other things. Backfiring on acceleration would indicate ignition misfiring or bad timing.

If the engine runs worse when you turn on the headlights, then the voltage/current to the ignition is insufficient.

I find it helpful to troubleshoot a motor by driving the car uphill, up a long grade. Its kinda like putting it on a chassis dyno, it loads the engine more than a level road.
