I purchased a similar air cleaner for my 1973 Mach 1 CJ ( Cobra Jet) with the vacuum actuated trap door opening. Mine did not have the shielding around the trap door as this one does, nor the blocked off second snorkel opening.

This one also has an opening for an additional snorkel that has been covered with a metal plate that appears to have been riveted into place.

It would be interesting to know the variety of OEM DeTomaso Pantera air cleaners that were installed as "Factory".

Does anyone here have the air cleaner type that is for sale on eBay with the Trap Door & Shielding & a blocked off second snorkel opening?...Mark
Mustang CJ air cleaners didn't change much at all thru the 71-73 years. They all had the rectangular vacuum operated door. Snorkel the #1-#2 position. No extra blocked off stuff going on there.

Mercury may have changed where the snorkel pointed...from where DeTomaso may have moved it if any.... The shorty curved edge opening with no snorkle or flapper (in the noted ebay auction) is odd.....why have the vacuum (ram-air!) flapper if you are disabling it and the heat activated valve in the snorkel with an opening right to outside air!? That would (should) not have passed smog checks in the state of CA! I would say that this was definitely a DeT mod and not a L-M mod.

$.03....

Steve,

That is where the snorkel was originally located. A block off plate was added (to cover the hole) when DT (Ford?) moved the snorkel to the opposite side of the air cleaner. The heat activated vacuum flapper was still used, as it was part of the snorkel. The early ('71) air cleaners did not have the other vacuum valve that is on the air cleaner in the eBay auction.

OK, I think I was mixing up pictures from another Pantera air clean auction..that was missing all the external bits!

The one that was posted above is what I have typically seen where the snorkel was relocated and the old hole covered.

OK, this one doesn't have an extra hole....it is missing the small "ram air" valve/flapper....I mistook this for a modification.
