I'm in the process of updating my A/C to R134a system. I came across this part near the evaporator, can someone identify and what it is for? If you look closely it appears that it is coming apart as if the upper left has separated from the cage, am I correct?

I assume you mean the coil shaped device with the wires attached to it? That is the resistor which cuts the fan speed of your cabin blower when set to low. I've seen several different versions of this item on Panteras.

If you have the dash out, now may be a good time to replace your blower motor with one that controls speed through taps in the windings and eliminate that resistor.
Pretty cheap. A prior post identifies a replacement as a VDO PM381 motor. About $40.
I purchased a new 3 speed motor assembly from PIM, not sure if I'll have to use that resistor at this point. Need to investigate more about that.
The resistor will no longer be needed.
