Agreed. The problem with the early deck lid strike is that it approaches the latch at approximately 90°, instead of being in line with it, as is the case with the replacement. This "angle" causes the strike to flex and eventually break where it is welded to the mounting plate.

A broken strike usually can be repaired, or a new one could easily be fabricated.
