I've never done this, but I'm replacing some cork valve cover gaskets with the motor in the car. The only hangup is what looks to be the brace that attaches the coolant overflow pipe to one of the valve cover bolts. I loosened the hose clamp attaching the pipe to the rubber hose to the overflow tank? I've never seen the pipe out of the car so maybe someone can clue me into getting the brace away from the valve cover gasket so I can remove the valve cover and get the new gasket on the passenger side?

On my car I had the same problem. I ended up draining some coolant (then spilling a lot more), removing it at the thermostat end (from inside the car with the bulkhead cover and dog-house panel removed) and then bending the bracket and adding a small extension to keep it out of the way in the future. It doesn't make the first time any easier, but subsequent removals have been easier.
