What's the best way to remove the triangular black trim piece with the horizontal ridges that is around the fuel filler door (what the parts manual calls the roof "ornament LH side")without damaging it? The car is a '74.

On my '74 the side gills are push fit. The gills have 3 lugs that push into plastic sockets. The pastic hardens over time which makes them hard to get off.
On the later cars I've worked on you need to remove the rear wheel, splash shield and then get your arm up behind this "gill" piece. There are 2 or 3 nuts to remove behind it.

Take a look up in the wheelwell area to see if you have nuts (insert joke here) or if it's push-on type. Either way, spray some penatrating fluid on there for a day or so.

The parts book for 73/74 shows nuts around the filler pipe area. It also shows one more stud with a fastener that I haven't been able to identify. It may be a plastic insert. It is located at the lower forward end of the "gill".

'71-73s have u-shaped steel brackets that bear against the body, and the 'gill' has 3 studs that pass thru the brackets with nuts and lock washers. Depending on your year of car, the gills may come off easily or be glued in by decades of paint. In any case, the right side is more accessible than the left, the nuts etc being behind the fuel tank body shield.
My 73 has nuts …… easy to remove……… do not over tighten

OK, I can’t stand it anymore,,,,
Be very careful when handling the nuts as you will be in a compromising position. Penetrating fluid should help to get them off nicely; additionally it will help prevent galling of the surrounding areas. Once you get a nut off, do not let go of them as they may drop & hit you in the chin or god forbid go in your mouth, choking on nuts can be very embarrassing, especially if the neighbor is watching. If for some reason nut ends up in your mouth,,, whatever you do.... do NOT swallow it, spit it out! When the time cum's, you might want to employ safety glass’s, rubber gloves and/or have a towel and some good cleaner ready for any excess fluid that may have splattered.
