Whats the best way of ensuring the new rings seat properly.

Its a newly machined block +30 with SLP forged pistons and SLP plasma moly rings both from Summit.

Have now ran the engine in the garage, not on the road yet, and its puffing smoke out the valve covers like an old steam train. Run it for about 15 mins in total, is that long enough. Valve covers are PIM with the round breather caps with the gauze filter inside.

Did not go for an expensive oil for the very reason to bed the rings etc. Using semi synthetic Castrol GTX.

Smoke doesn't seem to be getting any better so any help and advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Horace

PS Hyd roller cam fitted so no break in as for a new flat tappet

Plasma molly rings are very hard and require a special hone on your cylinders to facilitate a good seal of the rings to the walls of the cylinders. use a NON synthetic break in oil for the first 500 miles, drive your car with varying r.p.m. during break in, it could take as long as 2000 miles to break in plasma molly rings. On synthetic oils, the non petroleum based oil is so slick, modern engines designed to run them show virtually no wear after extended miles, I read a article in popular mechanics ( I think ) that after 100,000 miles on a L.S. engine running 5/30 synthetic their was no measurable wear!
This is why it is not used for break in. Get the current oil out and put in a break in petroleum based oil.
get the synth out of it & fill it with old school, like the idea you had cheap dino oil

I'm gonna disagree a little with Chris, after 15 mins the rings should be about done seating, but agree that you need to change the oil & get it out of the garage & drive it pretty hard.

this link is motorcycle specific but rings are rings, combustion pressure is what forces the ring to the cylinder wall

I've also seen cycle related procedure that directs you to use engine braking (decelerating with the trans in gear) during the ring seating process
...I Agree 100% with All of the Above Expert Advice!!

Synthetic Oil Does NOT Allow for the Needed Friction it Takes to 'Wear-In' The Rings to the Cylinder Walls!

I would Add...Take the Machine Onto the Highway/Freeway and Run the 'Crap' Out of it, as in Run It for a Day! Burn a Tank Full of Fuel through It.
NO! Do NOT High Rev It, but Do NOT run at any ONE 'Constant Sustained' Speed, Vary the Speeds Up and Down over Miles and MIles. Do NOT 'Lug' it, But 'Work' It. Don't Baby it, But Don't Run it 'TOO" Hard! Remember, You have to First 'Seal' the Blow-By.

After 500 Miles Change the Oil and Filter, but stay with the NON-Synthetic. After 1000-2000 Miles, You can go to the Synthetic.

...Good-Luck with It, Have Fun and Don't Hurt Yourself, with that Huge Grin On Your Face!!
