I just finished reading through four pages of posts about starter solenoids and have not come up with a conclusive answer to my question.

I have a mini high torque starter with a solenoid for my 1974 Pantera. Can I remove the solenoid off the firewall, extend my main positive cable to the starter, and extend the small red wire (I think it is a 14 gauge) off the old solenoid to the new starter solenoid and do away with the other wires without any issues? I was worried that this may cause problems with the ignition switch? I have read that these are a trouble area for voltage issues in our cars?

I have looked at the wiring diagram and do not see any other major issues with this modification but I am also not an electrician.

Any opinions? Thanks.

Yes, you could wire it this way. By all logic it should work just fine.

But in reality it doesn't.

This exact issue was covered last October on the POCA forum.

It got kicked around quite a bit.

But I think the final word came from Dan Jones with this posting:

In any event, here are Ford's instructions for the
PMGR starter:

Evidently, the solenoid on the new style starter draws too much current, compared to the OEM starter.

So, do you have the new starter already installed? Here is how SOBill Taylor suggests it be wired.

Larry,

Thanks for information. I was concerned with running it the way I had described due to all the horror stories involving the ignition switch. I’m glad I asked.

I decided to run everything through a relay instead of using the solenoid method. I also fused the relay just to be safe. It looks pretty clean to me. I’ll let everyone know if there are any issues with it after I run it for awhile.

Thanks for everything again.
