Well, after many months, today I got "the call".

As many of you are sick of hearing, my 74 Pantera, that I've owned since October, has not ever seen my house. Nor my town. Nor much of me for that matter.

The only time I drove it was the 12 miles from where I bought it to Roush's shop. They finished their "freshening" work in January with many parts from PI Motorsports (http://www.pim.net) and guidance from this board. That part of the story was reported earlier.

From there, the car went to Pat Mical's Performance Automotive Technology ("PAT" get it?). That's where the fun began, and I mean it.

Pat's job was loosely defined as "improve it without sacrificing originality". Yeah, vague as all get out, but we communicated well enough to get going.

This was NOT a restoration, so once I get photos, don't expect "fresh out of the oven" status. This was/is a super original one owner car, locked in a garage for 23 years. The story of the car's history will be told elsewhere, but from this point, just know that Pat hit the mark.

Today, he called, "It's done. I believe you'll be well-pleased."

The SHORT list includes a set of his headers, which in the words of the "special projects" tech at ROUSH, were "as fine a work as you're likely to ever see". High praise. Those were hooked up to a set of NOS Ansa pipes, sufficiently enlarged to accomodate.

Then the suspension was pulled completely, some nuts had to be chiseled off. The big stuff was powdercoated in "graphite", every bushing and bit of hardware replaced, new Koni orange for the shocks. It's all adjustable, but virtually 'invisible' unless you know where to look. He spent 4 hours aligning the car.

"This car will almost steer itself" said Pat in a thick New England accent. (With my deep southern, we almost needed an interpreter.)

The list goes on - New alternator with internal fan, stealth electronic ignition, lower amp fans, rotary compressor, 'quiet ride' insulation, 10" and 8" Campys, and well, you're tired of hearing about it.

Pat told me, "This is one of two of the most original cars I've ever seen in my life. Now it has been improved with the benefit of 35 years of technology without straying from the original path." Pat's turned into a friend and seriously trusted advisor on this.

Many of you told me how terrific his work was and over several months of communication, it is clear that he prefers to build upon that reputation. ( www.patsauto.com )

I can't wait to get the car home. If brother George will let me, we'll do a story about it. My story right now is that this Board has been and continues to be immensely helpful.

Look for an update in 10 days or so. I may not sleep 'til then!

Adams,

Don't for a moment think any details or stories about your car and it's rebirth will bore any of us here. That's the stuff we thrive on! PLEASE posts details and stories. George will try to get you to hold back a lot for an “exclusive” for the magazine but, for most of us with fading memories, that will just be another chance for us to enjoy the fruits of your project.

Congratulations!
George has already Fed-X'd me a sock and some duct tape; not sure what that was about!

Thanks for feigning interest AND your fading memory! This way, I can be repetitive repetitive and no one one will notice notice.

I spoke with Pat Mical again today - he was MAKING SURE THAT MY INVOICE WAS "OKAY".(When was the last time you heard THAT?) And it certainly was, is, all that.

SIDE NOTE: He's looking to bend some more headers (sold out) and it'll take THREE PEOPLE to make that happen. So if for any reason the market's current offerings are not your style or taste, check his out. To be fair, his do NOT compete with our beloved sponsors (and I mean that) since his are hand pulled on a custom jig, hand finished, and significantly over-engineered at a price you'd expect for same. I'll let him tell you the dyno difference. www.patsauto.com (You'd think I could remember his phone number by now, but see "fading memory" excuse above.)

Thanks again for the support guys. Just 9 days and counting!
Cannot wait to hear more about your car Adams. Pat is a great guy, and good friend. He has done considerable work on my car also and flying over to me here in Ireland was no problem. I also had suspension mods and a set of those headers mated to a 392 stroker. Glad you are happy with the work and look forward to hear your driving impressions.
BTW how is the Boxer????

'quiet ride' insulation

Your car sounds great! I don't think any of us get tired of hearing about cars getting fixed right.

Could you elaborate about the 'quiet ride' insulation? Thanks.

I actually heard about it on this board first. They have specially designed noise and heat insulation kits just for the Pantera (and a BUNCH more cars) Here's the main catalog.

http://www.quietride.com/product-catalog/default.htm

Go to the Pantera kit listing, from there you can download the catalog of kits for the car.

I had it added over the other insultation at the firewall plus some in the rear area of the engine compartment. I'm not crazy about cars that are too loud INSIDE and I didn't want the insulation visible. From what I've been told, the stuff kncked down the noise considerably. Hope this helps.

Stephen - Pat mentioned he'd gone to Ireland to work on your car and I remembered how pleased you told me you were with it. Pat agreed that it's fabulous, plus he enjoyed the trip and your company.

The Boxer is getting a clutch slave put on it now. Just counting the days 'til it too comes home. This is just pitiful - it's like having my 'children' away at camp! Thanks for asking.
